Year 7 STEM Topic Launch, “Racing the Sun”, girls used their critical thinking and problem solving skills to construct solar powered cars!

The project launch day for a new Year 7 STEM topic called ‘Racing the Sun’ took place on Monday September 14. The sun was out for the beginning of this Problem-Based Learning topic in which students needed to work as an effective team member to design, build and test a solar-powered car.

Mike Richards from Kite Magic and the University of NSW worked with students to learn how to build solar-powered cars whilst Roberta Ivers, from UNSW Women in Engineering presented to the students on the different types of engineers.

Visiting the school via ZOOM were three students from the Champion Sunswift team who shared their experiences of being part of a team of engineers whose solar-powered car won the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in 2019.

The engagement of the students in the activities organised for the day was fantastic.Thank you to all teachers and volunteers that were involved in the preparation of the day and good luck to Year 7 for their project!
